|Title||Dr. Walsh with young patient onboard SS HOPE in Ceylon|
|Description||Photo Caption log: Dr. William B. Walsh, Project HOPE's President and Medical Director visits with a young Ceylonese patient aboard the hospital ship S.S. HOPE. Project HOPE is the realization of this dream, the outgrowth of a resolution to do something about the woeful medical conditions he first witnessed in the Pacific during the war. In 1958, he founded Project HOPE and with President Eisenhower's backing a mothballed Navy hospital ship was lent to the Project, refitted and rechristianed the S.S. HOPE. Through the last decade this vessel has brought medical teaching as well as treatment to millions the world over. But just as important are HOPE's land-based stations which continue the work begun by the ship overseas and HOPE's two new domestic programs in Southwest United States.|
